I Wonder How Finley's Freaks Are Doing Out in the Bay Area...

ROYALS STEAL WIN FROM HALOS, 2-1
Patek and Wohlford swipe bases that led to winning runs
George Brett's 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th inning off Frank Tanana scored Jim Wohlford, giving the Royals a 2-1 win over the California Angels tonight at Royals Stadium, as Kansas City improves to 3-0, and California falls to 1-4.
It was a classic pitcher's duel as both Tanana and Dennis Leonard (1-0, 1.00) both went the distance, with Leonard (a graduate of Iona College!) allowing 1 run on 7 hits, striking out 3 and walking none, while Tanana allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 8 2/3 frames, striking out 8 and walking 1.
The Angels scored first in the top of the 4th inning as Bobby Bonds' double scored Rusty Torres to make it 1-0. It would be the only time California would score in the game. Tanana dominated the Fighting Boys in Blue, allowing just two hits in the first eight innings, but in the 9th inning, Freddie Patek rapped a single to lead things off for KC. The 5'4" shortstop would steal second, but Frank White struck out. Amos Otis grounded out to short, Patek did not advance, and it looked like the Angels would win. But Wohlford's clutch double brought Patek home, tying the game at 1-1. Then KC manager Whitey Herzog would have Wohlford steal third on the next pitch. Sure enough, he did, easily. And George Brett would make everyone at Royals Stadium leave happy by stroking a single to score Wohlford, making the Royals winners, 2-1.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
Freddie Patek had 2 more hits, he was 2-for-3 tonight, and he leads the team with a .545 average.
George Brett was just 1-for-4, but his game-winning single was his highlight. He is at .429 with 3 RBI.
Dennis Leonard was impressive with his 7-hit, 1-run complete game, this was the first complete game thrown by a Royal in 1976.
For the first time this season, Kansas City did not commit an error in fielding tonight.
The Angels' Frank Tanana struck out 8 Royals tonight, striking out 8 different players. The only player who did not whiff against Tanana? Jim Wohlford, who had the only extra base hit off him.
The Royals are now 3-0, they lead the Rangers by 1/2 game in the A.L. West, they are one of only two teams in the Junior Circuit, the Red Sox are 5-0.
The Royals and Angels wrap up this series tomorrow at Royals Stadium.
